The Farnborough International Airshow will celebrate its diamond anniversary, marking 60 successful years at the Farnborough Aerodrome. It will also be 100 years since Samuel Franklin Cody made the first successful sustained, powered flight in the UK from Farnborough Airfield on 16 October 1908.

Rojac are exhibiting as a part of the Midlands Aerospace Alliance stand C10, Pod 11 in Hall 1.

Composites update

Wednesbury Aerospace, Automotive, Marine, Defence and Formula One technology specialist Rojac Tooling Technologies Ltd, designers and manufacturers of advanced tooling and components, has embarked on a major investment programme to sharpen its edge competitively in producing a new generation of tooling equipment and carbon composite parts.

Rojac’s latest acquisition is an £80,000 autoclave supplied by Autoclaves Ltd of Yorkshire.

The 7 x 2.1metre autoclave cures carbon fibre composites under high pressure and heat. The new machine forms part of a brand new composites facility within a state-of-the-art environmentally controlled clean room and will be in production next month.

The facility will enhance the worldwide services already provided by Rojac in carbon composite pre-impregnated tooling, and low volume and prototype parts for the aerospace, automotive, marine, rail and civil engineering industries.

Duncan Blakemore, managing director of Rojac said: “Components made of advanced carbon fibre composite materials are lightweight, have a high strength to weight ratio”.“

Aerospace and Formula One are leading the way in their use. The market price of carbon fibre reinforced plastic saw a 150 per cent increase during 2005 primarily due to increased use in the civil aerospace industry.”He added: “I believe something like 80 per cent of the working parts the wings and fuselage of the new Boeing 787 are made using carbon composite materials. Our new facility will give us a stronger edge competitively in high technology sectors such as these.”

Rojac has extensive experience in the manufacture of mould tooling, jigs and fixtures, master models, patterns and prototypes for a diverse variety of tooling components. Market demand is growing for carbon fibre composite materials because they are also recognised as ideal for manufacturing consumer goods such furniture, motorcycles, bicycles, laptop computers, and sporting equipment.

Rojac sign up to SC21

SC21 is a change programme designed to accelerate the competitiveness of the aerospace & defence industry by raising the performance of its supply chains. International competition, together with the challenges posed by the defence industrial strategy, necessitates rapid improvement in the effectiveness of our supply chains. At the same time, industry must ensure that it delivers competitive solutions for customers whilst maintaining profitable business growth.

Signatories to SC21 are committed to developing supply chains to ensure they remain competitive and able to deliver increased value to customers. To be a signatory to the SC21 action plan you do not have to be a large prime company, we are actively encouraging companies from all levels in the supply chain.

SC21 signatory companies are committed to:

a new SC21 business culture: no matter what our role or position in a supply chain, we are determined to effect fundamental business transformation. We will work openly and transparently, through sharing information and working collaboratively, to deliver benefits across the industry. We will avoid duplication and waste.

delivering innovation: we will build on success to enable our industry to be a leader in the development of competitive value chains. We will pursue the most competitive solutions for our customers, by accessing innovation and specialist expertise. We will encourage innovation and investment of all types throughout the supply chain, achieved through providing a more trusting and open environment.

through-life solutions: total through-life cost is of paramount importance to our customers. We will involve all functions of the supply chain, for example: procurement, engineering and finance, throughout the project, product or service lifecycle. Transparency will be encouraged, with more planning and forecast data made available using bid conferences, project conferences and other means of communication.

delivering the SC21 plan: as a signatory to this action plan, we accept that our adherence to the commitments will be tested annually and that our performance will be measured and published. We will help in the development of this plan by sharing experiences.

leadership: we will encourage colleagues in the industry, including our customers and suppliers, to join SC21 as both signatories and active participants.

New Composites Facility

Rojac Tooling Technologies have recently ordered a new 7 x 2.1Mtr Autoclave due for installation November 2007.

The new autoclave is being installed into a brand new purpose built composites facility that will include a state of the art environmentally controlled clean room.

The new composites facility will enhance the services already offered by Rojac in carbon composite prepreg tooling, low volume and prototype parts.

To compliment the new composites facility Rojac are currently working towards AS9100 which is the Aerospace Model for Quality Assurance in Design, Development, Production, Installation and Servicing. AS9100 was developed using ISO 9001, AS9000, and EN9000-1, and builds upon their requirements to produce a globally-harmonized standard that meets the requirements of aerospace companies worldwide. The first standard available to use across the global aerospace community, AS9100 adds the additional requirements necessary to address both civil and military aviation and aerospace needs.
